Hot Ketchup & Mayonnaise

Pasta with meat sauce wasn’t cool any more and ketchup took on a new role. In many households, this specially seasoned tomato sauce quickly became the most popular addition to all kinds of recipes. Ketchup sandwiches even became a thing. This somewhat sweet tomato sauce was used to enhance the flavour of beans, lentils, potatoes and many other side dishes. Often, it would be used in such large quantities that barely anything was left of the original flavour of a lovingly prepared meal. It didn’t take very long until this manner of use began to be seen even in some adults and many housewives simply started to place a bottle of the new sauce replacement on the table instead of spending time making a complicated sauce from scratch. As this period of excited experimentation gradually began to calm down, the ketchup boom settled down and old sauce recipes were given a second chance. But this savoury tomato sauce didn’t get left behind. Quite the opposite. Over time a few recipes and dishes emerged, where ketchup continues to be used regularly and even today, children still love tomatoes best in this consistency and presentation.

New flavours and recipes

It didn’t take long until the standard tomato ketchup faced tough competition. The reason for this is because this tomato mixture was often eaten with meat, rice, roast potatoes, chips and pasta. Since a variety of spices work well with these different recipes and side dishes, they could also be integrated in the ketchup. Curry ketchup became the first well-known recipe in Germany. Many fast food stand got through several litres of the stuff every day, in addition to their normal tomato ketchup. Gradually, several manufacturers began to experiment more and more, adding in other herbs and spices to their tasty tomato concoctions. Garlic, wild garlic, chili and many other ingredients have all be used and what was once known as tomato ketchup was given several new and different names.

If you are as yet unfamiliar with extremely hot sauces and dishes, then we advise you start off with Iguana Lightning Hot ‘n’ Spicy Ketchup, which is spice level 3. The Organic Currywurst Sauce, Chipotle Ketchup and Spicy Ketchup are all spice level 5, putting them in the medium-hot range of spiciness. Beginners should handle these very carefully as inexperienced chili eaters will find that this degree of spiciness can really pack a punch. Spice level 7 is demonstrated by the Sweet Thai Sauce and the Habanero Ketchup. The Jolokia Ketchup leads this group of devilishly hot sauces with a spice level of 8. Make sure that you only try a very small amount of each sauce first. This is particularly when using it to cook a whole meal. You might prefer to simply place some spicy seasonings on the table to add as each person desires.
