Gulyas

The famous goulash from Hungary is more of a goulash soup than a meat dish. But if you want real Hungarian pleasure, you can`t get around this dish. Just try it out and let the authentic taste impress you.

Ingredients (serves 4):

3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 large onion
800 g beef
1 clove of garlic
0.5 tsp cumin seeds
2 tbsp paprika powder
1.5 litres of water
2 tomatoes
1 green pepper
300 g potatoes
a little salt
some black pepper

Preparation:

Peel and chop the onion and garlic. Cut the beef into 3 cm cubes.
Heat the oil in a large casserole over medium heat and brown the beef and onions. Then add the garlic and cumin seeds and mix it in.
Remove the pot from the heat and add the paprika powder so that it can be absorbed into the meat. Do not put it back on the plate while mixing it in, because it can burn and the powder in the dish will then take a bitter flavour.

Add the water to the pan`s contents, put it back on the heat and simmer over a medium heat for at least 1 hour.
In the meantime, wash, peel and dice the potatoes. Then core the pepper, wash it and cut it into strips. Wash, seed and chop the tomatoes.
After 1 hour of cooking, test the meat to check that it is well cooked. When the meat is well cooked, add the chopped tomatoes, the chopped pepper and the diced potatoes.
Season with salt and pepper and simmer for another 30 minutes, serve hot with bread.

If you like it hot, you can add a certain kick to the goulash with these chilli powders:
