Recommended for most vegetables is breeding in preculture indoors, especially the heat-loving varieties from southern Europe, such as pumpkin, cucumbers, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, brussels sprouts etc. So you have already strong small plants after the last frosts, which then can be planted out into the bed and be harvested early.

However, some vegetables don't tolerate the repotting or transplanting and should be sown directly in the bed. These include, in particular, root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, and beets, but also pumpkins, melons and beans.
