If you want to grow a chili plant from seed, then you should begin planting the seeds and keeping the soil damp from the middle of February onwards. Only damp, not wet! You can also start germinating your seeds on damp cotton wool and then plant them in potting soil. There are several reasons why it is advisable to plant chilies in sufficiently large pots or bowls, which are also portable. Please be aware of how big the chilies varieties may grow when rated 7-8 on the spice  scale. Although it is possible to repot the plants, this process is always fraught with danger for the plant. Carefully support young seedlings with a thin little stick and some twine.

Tips for achieving spice level 7-8

In general, it can be very difficult to achieve such a high spice level of 7-8 in our climes. Chilies need lots of sunlight, in order to form this level of spicy heat. However, it is hard for the to tolerate the intensity of the midday sun. The huge advantage of growing your plants in easily movable pots or bowls is that you can give the plants as much sunlight as possible, whilst also still being able to protect them from the strong midday sun, thereby providing them with the optimum amount of sunlight. This following procedure can be very useful in helping your plants to achieve spice levels 7-8. Only water plants in the evening. It is sufficient for the soil to be damp. Add fertiliser to your normal watering can whilst the plants develop their fruits. During the four weeks before the end of maturation, you should water the plants very little during the first week, normally during the second week, then very little again and finally water them normally in the fourth week; this helps produce a more intense spicy heat. More capsaicin is produced within the fruits themselves as a reaction to this lack of water.
