Bhut Jolokia (Capsicum chinense) comes from the Assam region in India and is a natural hybrid of the species Capsicum chinense and Capsicum frutescens. It was cultivated and used there many years before it became known in the western world. In the Assam region and the bordering states many different names have become established, but all of them describe the same variety with only minimal differences: Naga or Bih Jolokia, Naga Morich, Raja Chili, Moresh, Mircha and many more.
Before almost annually new, sharper cultivars outranked each other, Bhut Jolokia was the world record holder with over 1 million SHU from 2007 to 2011.
