Salt and pepper changed the world. Whilst salt is a product that is needed to survive, in contrast, pepper is a spice, which can change the flavour of a dish and stimulates the appetite.

Salt mines and other sources brought their owners great wealth. Entire kingdoms and principalities were built up around it. The situation was very similar for pepper. Both of these products led to active trading markets and established a history of cultural exchange. This is particularly true for salt, which was first transported along trade routes inland from coastal regions centuries ago. Inland salt mines were not discovered until later when these were managed and protected by their owners as if they were veins of gold. This range of products includes exclusive grades of salt and pepper, which stand out clearly in terms of both quality and taste in comparison with those found on supermarket shelves.

The first to turn up the heat

Long before chilies had reached our latitudes and was not found in any kitchen, pepper was already a well-known ingredient. In the early days of spice trading, it was considered to be a very special delicacy, which was only affordable for the upper echelons of the then societal hierarchy. At that time, spices were very rare and pepper introduced a welcome variety to tasteless food. Some varieties contain the alkaloid piperine, making them taste noticeably hotter and spicier. This aspect was prevailingly unknown in the cooking of the time and brought about a transformation in the kitchens of the wealthy population. Our product range includes a huge selection of exquisite varieties of the highest quality – from preserved and air-dried green pepper to black tellicherry to white, black and mixed colour peppercorns. The various different styles are outstanding for enhancing the flavour of a standard roast dinner, roast beef and pork, game, fish and many vegetarian dishes as well.

Many people already know that there is more than just one type of salt. For daily use, most people just use the commercial standard they can get in the supermarket. However, certain types of salt are much, much more than just an essential component of the nutrients we need to survive. In some countries, it is still customary to carefully crush sea salt over your meal with your fingertips. This ritual is believed to increase awareness of how valuable this natural substance is and emphasise the enhancement of flavour. By inspired by some of the following varieties: fleur de sel, coarse sea salt and coarse Himalayan crystal salt. There is a world of difference between these products and those you will find at your local supermarket. A completely new taste sensation awaits you.

If you have any questions, just ask away – if you want to find out more about the topic of salt and pepper then we would love to hear your questions.
