Harissa is a hot blend of spices, which originally comes from North Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco), which has also become popular in many Arabic and European countries.
It is made with hot chilies, cayenne pepper and pepper and rounded off with aromatic herbs (cumin and coriander). A hint of mint gives the whole blend a fresh touch of the Orient.
Traditionally the spice mix is mixed with olive oil to make a spicy paste, which is served as harissa sauce with flatbread or couscous (in Tunisia, it is served with practically everything). It can be used to flavour soups, stews, tajines and sauces, conjuring up the exotic flavour of the Orient.
