Harissa is a spicy spice mix originating from North Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco) which has also become popular in many Arabic countries and Europe.
It consists of spicy chilies, Cayenne pepper and pepper, accompanied with flavourful spices (cumin, coriander). A pinch of mint gives it a fresh, oriental touch.
The spice mix is traditionally mixed with olive oil to make a spicy paste, which as Harissa Sauce is served with pita bread or couscous (in Tunisia with almost all dishes). It is suitable for seasoning soups, stews and sauces, and creates an interesting oriental flavour.
