Rocoto chillies come from the Andes of South America (they grow at altitudes up to 3,000 metres) and were already cultivated there by the Incas thousands of years ago. They belong to the chilli species Capsicum pubescens ("tree chilli"). Rocotos contain a different mixture of different capsaicinoids than most other chilli species (dihydrocapsaicin and nordihydrocapsaicin). This is why they are often experienced as hotter. They have an exceptionally fruity aroma.
